FAQ
Questions about the clinic
If yours isn’t here, send it with an intake.
Cost
Who qualifies for free help?
Households at or under twice the federal poverty guidelines. We ask for your household size and a rough yearly income at intake; we don’t ask for pay stubs unless a court does.
What does “company pays” mean?
Several consumer laws, including the federal debt collection, credit reporting and warranty laws, make a company that broke them pay the consumer’s lawyer. In those cases our fee comes from the company, whatever your income.
Could I owe anything at all?
Court costs such as filing and service fees are separate. We ask the court to waive them when you qualify, and we tell you before anything is filed.
Intake
How fast will I hear back?
A staff lawyer reads every intake and usually writes back within a week. An intake marked as a lawsuit is read first.
Can I come in without an appointment?
You can drop off an intake at the front desk during office hours. A meeting with a lawyer is set up after the intake is read.
Is what I send private?
Intakes are read only by clinic staff and supervised students. Still, don’t put account numbers or your Social Security number in the form.
Cases
What don’t you handle?
Disputes with landlords, family members or other people, criminal cases and bankruptcy. We refer those to clinics that do that work.
Do you take cases against small businesses?
Yes, if it’s a business that sold you something, lent you money, collected a debt or reported your credit.
